Omid Djalili excells at impersonating different types of people dancing at, say, a family wedding or a dodgy nightclub. This dicso dancing is now expected at the end of his stand-up shows and he has difficulty closing a performance without it as an encore. I particularly enjoy his air drumming. Fab.

This dog is the most talented dog with the most awful name I've ever encountered. I've seen a short film about him and his owner though, and his owner loves him more than life itself. Some think it's demeaning to give dogs tricks to do, but some breeds of dog thrive on having a 'job' and this dog is one of them. I love the owner's accent too. He's a real live cowboy.

This is the third in my series of edinburgh Fringe reviews. I lack a clip for this show, so have put in a lego version of the A-Team opening theme instead!

The A-Team - The Musical

As I waited to get into this show, outside the Gilded Balloon, several thirty-something’s turned to stare at the huge chalk board bearing the show’s name and said ‘Ooh, what a great idea! I wish I was going to see that.’, or words to that effect. That, my friends, is the power of nostalgia. For those of us who sat in front of the telly of a Saturday teatime in the 1980’s, enthralled by the exploits of Hannibal, Face, B.A and Murdoch, the memories are strong and very special. Yes, the storylines for every episode of the A-Team were always basically the same, but there was a certain comfort in that. You always knew that however many helicopters crashed, however many shots were fired from automatic weapons, however many grenades were thrown at innocent stunt villains who had to gracefully jump out of the way, nobody would get hurt.
This show revisits those predicable storylines (from B.A. being drugged with milk to get him on a plane, to Hannibal’s ridiculous disguises at the start of each show) with humour and wistfulness, and adds in some songs for good measure. The show would be enjoyable enough if you’d never watched the A-Team, but really, you can only fully appreciate it if you’ve seen, as I have, more episodes than you’d ever admit to. The show is deliberately cheesy and the performances are sometimes spookily similar to the gloriously wooden ones of the original TV show. The A-Team van (you remember, black with a diagonal red stripe down the side) has to be seen to be believed. They even manage a car chase involving the much reviled Colonel Decker. The songs are good if not particularly catchy, but the cast make up for this with their charm. The real pull is the promise of being able to wallow in memories of television past, that remind you of a happier, more innocent time. I love it when a plan comes together.

Wil Anderson - Wilosophy

Wil Anderson is a tour de force. He has energy and passion as soon as he steps out on stage in his trademark thongs (that‘s flip-flops, if you‘re British!). This year, the Australian comedian and TV presenter (on shows such as ’The Gruen Transfer’, a fascinating and funny look at the advertising industry) has chosen to tell us about a few of his philosophies of life. I must admit, I have never nodded so often in agreement with what a comedian has had to say during a show. The madness of creationism, the inability of parents to take responsibility for children’s obesity, and racism that masquerades as nationalism, are some of the topics covered. This makes him sound like a soapbox though, which he’s not. Even when expressing strong opinions, he always acknowledges other people’s points of view, even if it is with a wink and a smile.
His humour is direct, some would say confronting, but always, it seems, honest. And I think honesty is the best basis for stand up comedy, as personal experience and conviction give the gags a certain edge that carries the crowd along. The laughs come thick and fast, as Anderson taps into not only our day to day experiences, but also world news, with expertise.
Unsurprisingly, there were a lot of Aussies in the crowd, as he is a very well known face over there. I think that those in Edinburgh this month should go and see this impassioned comedy coming out of Australia, as it’s always interesting and funny to get an outsider’s point of view of you own country, while at the same time getting a first hand perspective on their’s. So give it a go. This is an hour of stand up that gets personal, and benefits from it.

If Lord Vader was a manager in a supermarket...

There is controversy in Australia at the moment over Japanese Whaling. The Japanese say they kill whales for 'scientific research' when actually they are eating them. This is a different kind of whale, and I'm not sure if the people here are even Japanese, but I like to think this is a tactic the whales might like to employ with humans who get too close.

I know many people don't like caravans. I don't have anything against them, but when you're stuck behind one on a little county road, it can be frustrating. So, this is for anyone who needs to let off a little steam if they've been annoyed by a caravan these summer holidays. "I think it's running a bit rich..."

I'm sorry if my updates weren't as numerous yesterday, but I've been going to a lot of shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and have been low on time. However, I wanted to make up for it by including a few reviews of what I've seen and some clips where I can find them. Here's the first one:

The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre Goes to Hollywood

We entered the tiny, hot, Gilded Balloon venue at Teviot, to the strains of the sock puppets’ latest song ‘Back in E.D.I.N Braw’. As we shuffled to our seats in the third of only three rows (the place must hold less than fifty people) I giggled hearing the lyrics ‘The Morningside ladies really knock me out’ to the tune of the Beatles classic ‘Back in the U.S.S.R.’
Although this is the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre’s third year at the Edinburgh Fringe, this was the first time I’d seen them, and looking at the small, tartan lined stage on the stage, it was tricky to know what to expect.
When the lights went down, we were treated to a show that was, from the outset, so funny, so original and so entertaining, we didn’t want it to end. Their googly-eyed charm was hard to beat and every song was a winner. Even if you’ve seen them on youtube, nothing could compare with the raw magic of their live show. It’s difficult to review this show without giving too much away, but highlights included: their opening song, the honestly named ‘I’m a sock’; a topical parody of ‘Footloose’; a blasphemous and hilarious cover of the Mary Poppins number ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’; a side splitting tribute to Michael Jackson and a light sabre fight I’ll never forget. Lets just say this show is varied, imaginative, charming, highly original and uproarious.
By the time their creator (Kev F Sutherland) emerged from behind the little tartan set, red faced and sweating, to tumultuous applause I remember thinking - who would’ve thought sock puppets could fill an hour so engagingly? It’s the show that keeps on giving, as you’ll be quoting it long after the festival is over.

This was part of Ellen's stand up, where she tried to show, through interpretive dance, what her experiences were when she came out. I wonder how many gay people can relate to this. She's certainly been amazingly strong and intelligent through some ignorant criticism.

Robin Williams gives his take on the 2008 American presidential election. Obama is praised and Bush is missed, but only for his comedy value! John McCain, Sarah Palin, Jack Nicholson and Arnold Schwarzenegger come in for some stick.

Ah yes, we all knew Bonnie Tyler's origional video for this song was bizarrley pretentious to say the least, but this literal translation just goes to prove it.

If you think you're bad at parking, watch this! The driver is certainly persistent, and the Benny Hill music sets it off beautifully.

I'm actually slightly creeped out by this, but maybe I'm an old cynic. Many will find it romantic, others will find it strange, I'm just shocked she said yes. I'm hoping he's a Disneyland employee or something. Crazy stuff.

This is one of the best clips on the internet in my opinion. Basically, it's a guy called Matt who was a bit of a deadbeat and a terrible dancer who decided to go travelling. Through various twists and turns (read the full story at wherethehellismatt.com) he got to travel to a huge amount of places around the world, and everywhere he went, he danced. Badly. An inspiration to us all I think. Travel more and dance like nobody is watching!

Jim Parsons, who plays Shelodon in The Big Bang Theory, shows once again his skill for remembering really tricky lines. (He's been nominated for an Emmy Award this year. Quite right too.) Next time you have to make a difficult decision, maybe you could try this - if you remember how it works.
